MAGAZINES & RADIO

If you’re interested in heavy metal or perhaps have a band which is seeking exposure, there are several mediums which showcase heavy metal music and which encourage undiscovered bands to step into the limelight. Heavy metal magazines are popular and can be purchased from newsagents, bookstores, music retailers, and at gigs and festivals. Radio stations (both in your general area and streaming online) are also a great way to hear new music and get your own music out there.

There are several heavy metal magazines currently in publication. These include Decibel, Brave Words and Bloody Knuckles, Metal Hammer (also available online), Unrestrained!, Terrorizer, Metal Maniacs, Pit, Kerrang, and Revolver. Some – such as Kerrang, Metal Hammer and Terrorizer – are UK publications who give a lot of page space to British heavy metal bands. Brave Words and Bloody Knuckles and Unrestrained! are Canadian publications who of course spend more time on the Canadian groups. There are also several online publications which are updated more frequently and may give you better access to mp3 downloads, band merchandise, and up-to-date concert and festival information.

Radio is a great way to hear new releases and newly discovered acts, and to make your own music heard. Although the audience may be more dispersed than radio listeners have traditionally been, internet radio (streaming) is one of the best ways to hear quality heavy metal, broadcast from all over the world. If you have a particular interest in the Canadian or Scandinavian heavy metal scene but live in the UK for instance, internet radio is the way to go.
